Why is Dropbox more popular than other tools with similar functionality?

As a co-founder of Syncplicity, a service that competes with Dropbox, this question has been on my mind for years. We launched within a few weeks of Dropbox, we had multi-folder synchronization & read-only sync, and we were a few years older than the Dropbox kids. I'm very proud of the service we put together and am happy to see the service shift towards businesses, yet Dropbox kicked butt. Here's why:

Great insight by Isaac Hall on how Dropbox (one of my favourite online services) used a combination of viral marketing, closed beta'sand simple and focussed product development to become the great success that it is.

Are we about to get the BBC iPlayer on the Apple TV?

Judging by the amount of retweets I got last night, following my post on Twitter that the BBC will soon be launching an iPlayer app for the iPhone and iPad, I guess there is a real desire to see this happen from UK users.

The one observation I have is that with the launch of this application, are we about to see the iPlayer available on the new Apple TV?

Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, we know that the Apple TV runs iOS. So surely it’s just a short sidestep from the launch of a dedicated iOS app for the iPhone & iPad to it being made available on the Apple TV?

I wait with baited breath!

30 day trial of Microsoft Office 11 for Mac now available

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_jkzji

That's right, over 3 months since it was first released and ahead of Macworld 2011, Microsot have finally released a 30 day trial their flagship office and productivity suite of software for the Mac, Office 2011.

I've been using it for over a month though and its a vast improvement on the previous version (2008) and brings many of the features available to our PC cousins to the Mac. Most notibly Outlook replaces Entourage for the first time.

First impressions? I personally prefer iWork on the Mac for word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. Having using Office for nearly 2 decades I found the PC versions bloated and iWork is a refreshing change. That said if you need to integrate with Exchange or like me work with colleagues using PC's then having a native version of both Word and Outlook is a great help.

Introducing the new Guardian iPhone app

Today The Guardian Newspaper here in the UK has announced a new version of their popular iPhone application.

It was originally thought they were waiting for subscription support to arrive from Apple in iOS but it looks like they have decided to push on without this.

So whats new in version 2?

• Faster, automatic updates for our live news and sport blogs – no need to refresh

• A new football scores service with free goal alerts by team and match for the main UK leagues and European competitions

• Our award-winning video content is included for the first time, and looks great whether you’re connected via 3G or Wi-Fi

• You’ll see reader comments below articles that are open to them; we’ll be adding in the ability to add comments via the app as soon as we can

• A brand new homepage design – look out for the multimedia carousel – and a new treatment for live blogs

• A new way to view the stories trending across guardian.co.uk and social media (otherwise known as Zeitgeist on our website)

Of course, all that comes on top of the features from the original app, such as offline reading, front page personalisation, retina display graphics and the ability to easily save articles and sections as favourites or share content via email, Facebook or Twitter.

As a long term user of their version 1 app I’m definitely looking forward to this, the features it includes and will be downloading it straight away

Posterous vs Tumblr - a few weeks on

Well it’s now been a few weeks since I moved across to Posterous from Tumblr and wrote up my first impressions. I therefore thought it was worth a follow up post to let you know how things were going and see whether I had changed my mind about any of my initial observations.

So read on and I’ll outline what in my opinion has been the good, the bad and the downright ugly of my experiences so far …
